Art in the Hotel
City Inn is pleased to present our first solo exhibition across multiple hotel sites.Su Snodin: Studio Still Lifes
August - December 2008
The exhibition comprises of two bodies of work by London based painter, Su Snodin in our City Inn Glasgow and City Inn Bristol hotels. Paintings shown in Glasgow are closely observed large scale still lifes of containers and everyday objects. Paintings shown in Bristol are Snodin's renderings of landscapes that have been imposed upon by humans.
Snodin states she paints "what I like to look at". Overall geometric composition and the relationships between objects within compositions are closely considered in both bodies of work. Snodins paintings are utterly meditative. She delves into her subject matter, acutely aware of the geometry at work and interplay of colour, light and shapes. The chosen objects for still life paitings are the everyday cups, saucers, bowls and platters of our lives, vessels oftentouched but rarely given the attention that Snodin lavishes on them as she paints.
To create her still life compositions, Snodin frequently thoughtfully places her objects on the studio floor. This create a vantage point for both viewer and painter to visually dive into the various vessels and to be further drawn into the paintings. Light is painted onto the canvas in such a way that a passage of time is trapped. Her luminous objects impose themselves on each other although rarely touch.
